LISA
KIRK
SYMPATHETIC RESONANCE
June 6th through July 11th, 2004
Opening Brunch, Sunday, June 6th, 2004, 4-8pm
On June 6th, 2004, from 4-8pm, FALSE FRONT is pleased to present
its inaugural project SYMPATHETIC RESONANCE, a site-specific window
installation by LISA KIRK.
As a follow-up to her opening (and closing) extravaganza THE GREATEST
SHOW ON EARTH at PARTICIPANT, INC., Kirk will present interpretations
of “sympathetic resonance”, referencing such classic
sources as Volker
Schlöndorff’s Tin Drum and Marcel
Duchamp’s Large Glass. In addition Kirk will debut her
new film at the opening brunch. (June 6th, 2004, 4-8pm)
Kirk is best known for her renegade curatorial projects, specifically
YOU (2003) and THE OUTLAW
SERIES (2003). Utilizing spaces ranging from her mother’s
Chelsea apartment to NYC bookstore bathrooms, Kirk’s approach
simultaneously incorporates and challenges contemporary art’s
resignation to “White box aesthetics” in an effort to
dismantle and poke fun at institutional elitism with democratic
verve.
Sympathetic resonance is the same phenomenon through which certain
vocalists can shatter glass by creating a pitch, which operates
by disrupting the material’s internal integrity. By invoking
the specter of shattered windows, Kirk calls attention to the paradox
of the South Street Seaport’s current transformation from
its historical blue collar function into a tourist environment.
The broken glass phenomenon is also a traditional signifier used
by police officers in locating crime. Kirk puts this theory to the
test.
Lisa Kirk was born in Newport, RI in 1967 and was raised in the
West Village of New York City. She received her BFA from the School
of Visual Arts, NY in 1990 and her MFA from the University of California
in 1992. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the
National Library of Congress, The Long Beach Museum of Contemporary
Art, and in New York City in the archives of White Columns and Artists'
Space. She lives in New York and teaches at the Cooper Union School.
